Press kit: The State of VA Claims Agents 2026
Original research from an independent exam-prep platform: the first public census of VA-accredited claims agents, built from VA's own public records. The findings below are quotable with attribution. Independent analysis, not affiliated with VA.
About the platform
VA Claims Agent Exam Prep is an independent study platform for the VA accredited claims agent exam, with a verified practice question bank, an interactive voice quiz game, and an audio study series. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and its content is not legal advice. The site also publishes original, sourced research on the claims agent profession.
About the research
The State of VA Claims Agents 2026 (published October 2026, live at vaclaimsagentprep.com/guides/state-of-va-claims-agents-2026) is the first public census of the VA claims agent profession. No current, sourced headcount existed, so we built one from VA's own records: the VA Office of General Counsel's public accreditation directory, VA's VetPop veteran population estimates, and VA's monthly fee report.
Key findings (quotable)
All figures below may be quoted with the attribution: "according to an analysis of VA public records by VA Claims Agent Exam Prep."
- 700 accredited claims agents nationwide, up 33% from about 525 in 2020.
- 118 currently accredited agents were accredited in 2026 through early October, versus 99 in all of 2025 and 69 in 2024: the fastest pace of growth on record.
- $422.2 million paid by VA to accredited attorneys and agents in the last 12 months, averaging $35.2 million per month, up about 7% since VA began publishing the figure in January 2026.
- About one claims agent for every 26,100 veterans nationally.
- Florida leads with 92 agents; Delaware, Montana, and Vermont have none listed.
- Agents are about 12% of the fee-eligible representative pool: 700 agents versus 5,077 accredited attorneys.
Methodology summary
We downloaded the VA Office of General Counsel's public "complete list of accredited claims agents" Excel file on October 5, 2026 and parsed 700 data rows, counting the state column for the geographic breakdown and the accreditation-date column for the yearly figures. We downloaded the OGC attorney list the same day and counted 5,077 rows. The 2020 baseline of 525 agents comes from Congressional Research Service report R46428, which cites the same OGC directory as of June 2020. Veteran population figures use VA's VetPop2023 FY2023 state estimates, and fee totals come from VA's monthly "Attorney and Agent Fees Paid by VA" report.

Quote from the founder
"Nobody publishes a census of VA claims agents, so we built one from VA's own records: 700 agents, growing at the fastest pace on record, inside a profession with more than $422 million in reported fees last year. Anyone considering this career should be able to see the field as it actually is."
